Sacramento Valley Charter School, the
first Punjabi Charter School of the United States, celebrated its second end-of
the academic year picnic today in Regency Park Natomas. School staff, students
and their parents converged to rejoice and share success of their children
academically, emotionally and personally. As the school started with great
hopes of introducing innovative ways to create a desire for learning, parents
expressed great satisfaction at school’s approach of harmoniously developing
their children through academic rigor, cultural and linguistic connections.
Dr.
Gurpreet Singh Chahal, a veterinarian and a community leader, said that the
school was making a big difference in children’s lives. His daughter and son, 6th
and 3rd graders have distinguished themselves in all areas of study
and extra-curricular activities. A parent, Bhai Ranjit Singh preferred
Sacramento Valley Charter School for his son and daughter to a public school in
West Sacramento. His son, Damanpreet Singh, 8th grader joined in the
group that left for Washington, DC on June 4th for an educational
tour to learn about American history and the political system. Mr. Atma Bagri appreciated the school staff
for inspiring students to accept challenges in their lives. Kuldip Kaur Bagri,
a school bus driver, finds Sacramento Valley Charter School a golden
opportunity for her daughter who has been on honor roll since the beginning of
the school.
Parents Mr. & Mrs. Nalesh Rai are
proud of their son, Armaan Rai, a 3rd.grader, who recited a Punjabi
poem in front of the whole school with great confidence during Second Annual
Punjabi Festival. Rais are from Fiji, therefore, have very little connection
with the Punjabi language. But to see their son excelling in Punjabi language, along with English and math, is a big surprise for them.
Hundreds of parents during the Picnic Party
had a chance to interact with one another and make positive connections to the lives
of their children. Many psychological and emotional problems in children are
due to lack of a constructive community life. Charter schools provide a
platform for parents and the community to collaborate with teachers, school
staff and the administration to positively impact achievement levels of their
children.
The academic year ended with Award
Ceremony on June 6, 2013. School Principal, Mrs. Jane Egashira congratulated
students and parents for their achievements and continued support to the
school. The principal highlighted how the school started with only 60 students,
and how it had now expanded to more than 200. It has become difficult to
accommodate a large number of applicants due to the lack of space.
Sacramento
Valley Charter is known for its academic rigor that is combined with cognitive
skills in second language learning. Common Core standards for English Language
Arts (ELA) also support second and third language learning skills as greatly
beneficial for strengths in the first language.
The California State Board Education has issued guidelines for aligning
English Language Arts and the second Language learning in schools.
It emphasizes:
“Research
demonstrates that as students come to understand how language works through
their learning of a second or third language, their understanding of and
attention to language conventions and functions expands and has an impact on
applications in their first language. Through learning a second or third language,
students also acquire vocabulary that will unlock the meaning of related
cognates in their first language, expanding their first language vocabulary.”
Sacramento
Valley Charter School’s Punjabi program is fully aligned with common core
Standards in ELA and Math. While learning Punjabi, students learn about complex
grammatical, linguistic, and semiotic systems of both English and Punjabi. In
addition to it, they learn math and science concepts in Punjabi which directly
impact their high achievements in the core curriculum.
